Lazy Sunday
Willow, Xander & Buffy
Season 3, just after graduation
Just a short bit of nuthin', written for [info]tinpanalley 'cause she makes me smile.

Lazy Sunday

“Wednesday all-you-can-eat Jell-O.”

Willow stopped attempting to force the tip of her tongue inside her straw and looked at Xander. “That’s what you’re going to miss most about high school? Cafeteria food?”

“Hey, unlike some of us who had the option of brown-bagging every day but pizza day, others may have enjoyed the novelty of deep-fried fish sticks as opposed to the at home microwaved variety.” Xander didn’t bother to look up but instead occupied himself by chasing the cherry at the bottom of his cup through the sludge of melting slushie.

Willow flipped over onto to her stomach. “Buffy?”

“I don’t know,” Buffy shrugged. “I mean, I don’t know that I have the cred to weigh the decrease of yuck between deep fried versus microwaved frozen fish parts.”

“No, I mean your turn.”

Buffy rolled over onto her back and let her head fall into the curve of Willow’s knee. Her forehead wrinkled as she tried to remember the categories they’d already chosen. “Oh. Um…biggest disappointment.”

Xander snorted. “Sex.”

“Xander!” Willow quickly jerked the straw from her mouth before Xander could give her a well deserved ‘say it, don’t spray it.’ “Ladies present,” she giggled in mock horror. “Way to be gentlemanly.”

Xander pinned the cherry down and impaled it on his straw. He nibbled around its edges, shrugging. “I had sex with Faith – how gentlemanly am I required to be?”

“Good point. Dish - I bet her legs weren’t shaved all the way, huh?” Willow poked a toe into Buffy’s ribs and then ignored the jalapeño flinging that earned her.

Xander kept his eyes on his straw, digging through the ice in case this was a rare two cherry slushie. “Big build up, couldn’t live up to the hype, all kind of a blur,” he said quickly.

Willow smirked, and then turned her head to look into Buffy’s bedroom mirror to see if it looked like a smirk. It didn’t; but that could have been the jalapeño juice in her eye. “Oh, believe the hype,” she said, “I mean, I …” her brain caught up with her mouth and she glanced over at Buffy.

Buffy’s smile was sad, but it was a smile. “A world of regret, yes, but disappointment? No.”

Willow’s attempted smirk grew into a huge grin. “Big no.”

“Okay, that’s so not fair,” Xander muttered.

“Why not fair?” Buffy and Willow said together, and then gave each other ‘jinx’ rib tickles.

Xander set his cup on the floor next to the bed and stretched out next to them, his gaze earnest. “Okay, as a chance to establish my manliness, it was definitely not up there with my shining moments, and as a whole…physical experience thing, well…” He coughed. “I mean, mine was just kind of a variation on a theme – a massively more exciting variation but you get me. But you guys, you had to to deal with…” He chuckled nervously. “And then there’s, you know, an ick factor…”

Buffy closed her eyes, Xander’s t-shirt covered shoulder warm against her side, Willow’s leg cool and silky beneath her cheek as she relaxed into the mattress. “Xander, say ‘hymen’ and become one with the floor.”

I don't really think Xander would ever admit sex was a dissapointment. At least not at this stage in his life.

And does that mean Faith's pretty much two for two in the 'didn't rock my world' category? Poor girl. :)

Fun.

It was funnier in my head.

After his experience with Faith, the horrendous break up with Cordelia, not to mention the Willow and Buffy crushing I'm surprised Xander just didn't give up on sex completely. He had a terrible time of it, if only he'd understood that he was not completely straight we could have gotten some real angst when his crush moved from Willow to Oz and from Buffy to Angel.

And of course, to finally find true love with Spike.

::smooch::

I love sweet moments between these best friends like this. You know that after the huge epic battle of graduation they would have just... vegged out for awhile. They deserved it.

all kind of a blur

Yep, that's what I would have thought.

brown-bagging every day but pizza day

That's what my kids do! Um, does Xander think this is a good thing or a bad thing? I figure the cafeteria food is kind of gross. Better to have a PB&J from home. Pizza day is a treat, though.

Hee! I always imagined that Xander was the only one who actually ate the cafeteria food - partly because he had no choice, and partly for his affection for food with no ingredients you can pronounce. He's probably a little envious of Willow's brown-bagging, though it no doubt contained celery sticks and whole wheat germ cookies...

Pizza day was a treat! We had a great southern cafeteria with lots of homemade yeast rolls, cornbread and stews and chilies, though. No fish sticks for us!

And getting shoved out the door shirtless and whatall...not to mention the choking follow-up...yeah. I always loved the little moments with the 3 of them when the monsters were at bay. *g*

I've got to say that I just love this little moment in time, between these friends, when they really felt like the parts of a whole. This is the type of scene that shows the relationship between the three of them to perfection...the closeness that I, for one, treasured. Now this is the type of three-some that I can really enjoy, *winks*, and you make me hear them and see them and feel them again in that time before it was all, if not broken, cracked. :(

Love your voices here, sweetie. Vintage Buffy, Willow and Xander!

While I might quibble with some of the character's comments, the overall feeling of camraderie, how comfortable, loose and easy they could be with each other, is perfect!

Now, was "Xander pinned the cherry down and impaled it on his straw." a deliberate bit of phallic imagery? ;)

This is so enjoyable, and totally feels like you captured a moment between the three of them. I love the intimacy and closeness between, the casual touching speaks to their friendship.

I like them comparing their first sexual experiences. It's always been sad to me that Xander's likely didn't live up to what he'd imagined it would be like.

I love this description, it really suggests their closeness:
Buffy closed her eyes, Xander’s t-shirt covered shoulder warm against her side, Willow’s leg cool and silky beneath her cheek as she relaxed into the mattress.

“Xander, say ‘hymen’ and become one with the floor.” heee! That's awesome.

Terrific writing to capture the closeness among the three of them like that, all the sense details, Xander chasing for a second cherry, the discussion of cafeteria food and then the merits (or not) of sex with Faith. That final moment with Xander's T-shirted shoulder warm against Buffy's side, and Willow's leg next to hers--just perfect telling description. I love your writing.
